Our WILDERNESS EXPEDITIONS aim to explore some of Africa’s true Last Edens and Hidden Gems, often located far from the beaten path, in pristine, wild, and untamed environments. These Expeditions are particularly suitable for experienced travelers, adventure-seekers and – in general – guests interested in the feelings of remoteness, solitude, and untamed wilderness.

The WILDEBEESTS MIGRATION EXPEDITION is the perfect way to experience on of Africa’s Rarest Hidden Treasures: the Blue Wildebeests migration that takes place every year in November & December between Angola and Zambia, being Africa’s second largest Wildebeests migration after the one between Kenya and Tanzania.

This itinerary will bring participants to an extremely far and remote Wilderness Area, characterized by a continuous and violent fight for survival in the Liuwa Plains, where hundreds of Blue Wildebeests gather every year at the beginning of the rain season, having to fend off the continuous attacks from hyenas, cheetahs, lions and jackals.

This Expedition is proposed as Camping. Tailoring options include:

Note: This Safari uses a support vehicle to carry all camping gear, food and luggage for all bookings of 4 participants and above. The support vehicle will depart ahead of the main vehicle and reach the destination in advance, so that by the time guests arrive their camp will be already set-up.

Day 01 :

Lusaka (Travel distance: 40km / 1 hr – Tarmac Road)

Upon arrival at Lusaka international airport, you will be welcomed by your guides and assisted in final preparations (local SIM card, forex, etc.) before your Safari starts. Short transfer across town and check-in at Sandy’s Creations, a beautiful accommodation immersed in wonderful gardens with two swimming pools, bars and restaurants. Dinner in Lusaka not included.

Day 02 :

Kafue National Park – Main road (Travel distance: 290km / 5 hr – Tarmac Road)

Kafue National Park, extending for 22,400 km2, is Africa’s second largest National Park and is characterised by many different eco-systems and sceneries. From the southern Nanzhila Plains, to the lake habitat of Itezhi-tezhi, to the fit bush and Miombo forest up to the northern Busanga plains.

During your Safari you will visit the northern part of the National Park, camping in some of the most spectacular places and conducting numerous Game Drives in each area.

Our vehicle will pick you up from your accommodation in Lusaka at 06,30 and departure for a 290km transfer on tarmac road to the Hook Bridge. Here, we will take a short gravel road to our first destination within this National Park. Check-in at Pinnon Lodge for 1 night in a en-suite Safari tent. Lunch at the lodge and Afternoon Game cruise on the Kafue River. Dinner at the lodge.

Day 03 :

Kafue National Park - Mongu (Travel distance: 300km / 6 hr – Tarmac Road)

Sunrise Breakfast and morning Game Drive. Return to the lodge at around 10.30, packing of the vehicle and quick brunch. Transfer to Mongu (approximately 6 hours, depending on road conditions), where we will check-in at a Mongu Country Lodge for one night. The rest of the day is available for relax while your guides will take care of the supplies for the next leg of your tour.

Day 04 :

Liuwa Plains (Travel distance: 100km / 4 hr – Tarmac Road + Bush Trails + Deep Sand) – Southern Camp

The Liuwa Plains National Park is one of Africa’s most remote destinations and a true wilderness area. The landscape, usually flat and barren, with the first November rains start covering up with grass and a multitude of flowers attracting thousands of Wildebeests from other areas of Zambia and the neighbouring Angola. Together with the wildebeests, a large population of hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and lions come to populate the plains and join the resident zebras, buffalos, and many other herbivores. The quantity and diversity of birdlife is also spectacular, and it represents one of the main attractions of this park.

Departure immediately after breakfast for Liuwa Plains N.P. Long Game-viewing activity en-route to our campsite and arrival around lunch time. Camp will be set in one of the three community campsite and lunch. Afternoon game drive and return to camp around sunset. Dinner around the fire and night camping.

Attention: Liuwa Community Campsites are extremely remote areas, without access to drinking water, and very limited access to electricity and hot water. Most campsites have now implemented some sort of solar system providing basic illumination and hot water but not always reliable, while the most remote campsites only have a drop toilet and bucket shower.

During these three full days we will follow the wildebeests, eventually moving from one campsite to another in order to always be at the centre of the action for a real Wilderness Expedition experience!

Day 08 :

Liuwa Plains – Kafue National Park (Travel distance: 450km / 10 hr – Sand + Bush Trails + Tarmac Road)

Early wake and sunrise breakfast. Break down camp and transfer on sandy and gravel roads up to Mongu. From there, we will continue on a tarmac road to the Hook bridge in the Kafue National park, where we will spend a night lodging at Pinnon Lodge. Lunch break along the way, depending on time. Night lodging and dinner at the lodge.

Day 09 :

Kafue National Park - Lusaka (260km / 4 hours)

Breakfast at the lodge, followed by a return transfer to Lusaka where we plan to reach around lunchtime.

Own arrangements for lunch and check in at Sandy’s Creations. Afternoon relax after the Safari to prepare your luggage or visit the capital city.

How fit do I need to be to do this trek?

Annapurna Base Camp is a Grade B or a moderately difficult trekking route. So any fit person can do this trek, even if you do not have any previous experience. You should be aware of what to expect and mentally prepare for it. Then, as long as you will too, you can.

How long do we walk every day when doing Annapurna Base Camp trekking?

On average, you walk about 4 to 6 hours per day. One or two days can be as less as 3hrs and one or two days can be as long as 7hrs.

What is the highest altitude reached in this trek?

The highest altitude reached is 4190m. This is the elevation of Annapurna Base Camp. ABC is the highest we will climb in this trek.

What about battery charging and hot shower facilities?

Yes, you can charge batteries en route. Charger should be brought. There are hot shower facilities as well. You may have to pay a certain amount for both ($1-$2). Negotiate. Also, a hot water facility could be free at a lower elevation.

Are there ATMs on the way to Annapurna Base Camp?

No. There are no ATMs on this trek route. You will have to draw enough cash in Pokhara or Kathmandu. There are a number of ATMs in these cities. Everything is paid in Nepali rupees. So money should be exchanged before the start of the trek.

What about internet access?

Yes. The Internet can be accessed in most places. Sometimes, there might be some technical problems. The Internet in Nepal is not as fast as you are used to and at times you can just lose connection.

Is it necessary to hire Guides/trekking agency for Annapurna Base Camp trekking?

Not really. It depends on you. If you want, ABC trekking can be done independently. You could hire a guide and a porter by yourself instead of going through an agency or not hire a guide at all. Although, not having a guide can be a little problematic during the offseason.

It really depends on you. Is it your first time in Nepal? How confident are you of being able to find your way around? How pressed on time are you? If you go through an agency, it will be costlier but everything will be planned. You will only have to come, trek and return.

How much do guides and porters cost?

For the Annapurna region, pay for guides range from $20 to $30 per day and porters take $15 to $25 per day.
